Booze I've Tried
Current Beverage: Elysian Brewing Co’s The Mens Room Original Red Ale (5.6%AbV)
I’ve had a few other Elysian beers and they’ve been quite good and have had fairly mythological names.. Perseus Porter, Dragonstooth Stout (yum!), The Wise ESB, and so forth. Just strikes me that “The Mens Room” is an interesting departure from their usual modus operandi.
If you were wondering, this beer is named after a program on Seattle’s 99.9FM KISW. From what I can tell its some dudes yacking about sports, current events,  and general dude banter. It seemed appropriate to stream the station while drinking this beer. It appears to be a hard rock/metal station that mixes up old and new. I like it.
Now onto the beer..
Pours a nice hazy dark amber with a definite red tinge to it. Nice to see a red ale that’s actually, y’know, red. A finger or so of yellowy off-white coloured head that settled fairly quickly. Very little lacing.. the sides of the glass were fairly clean when it was all said and done. Just the right amount of carbonation for a beer of this type; some bubbles, but nothing hyperactive.
Moderately strong aroma that’s pleasant but nothing to write home about. Predominantly hops with a good malty background. Some warm coppery notes.
Initial sip is fairly crisp and malty, some bready flavour. Some caramel. A hint of fruityness.. I’m going to go out on a limb and say it reminds me a bit of citrus with bittersweet melon notes. Aftertaste is warm and hoppy and is where the fact that this is a red ale really shines through. It’s my favourite part of this beer. It’s a fairly clean finish.. the hops hang around for a few seconds, but nothing intrusive. I would describe this beer as medium bodied.
This is my second one of these, and I would enjoy it again.
Partial proceeds from this beer go towards supporting the families of military vets through Fisher House.
